Sailors in Lake Stevens and beyond are busy building sailboats for the annual Lake Stevens Aquafest $50 Boatrace.
Boats have been built of all kinds of materials. They range from milk cartons to steel and the amount of creativity is amazing.
The only catch: all materials must have a value of less than $50. Other rules require sail power and specifically outlaw engines of all kinds.
Each year brings new challenges and hilarity. It’s great fun for sailors and spectators alike. July 31st is the race day and it’s not too early to begin building.
Entry fees are only $10 per boat if submitted before July 10, otherwise they are $20 day of race. For more information and an application to participate check out www.aquafest.org and click on “Events”nand then “$50 Boatrace”. In past years the race has been chronicled in this paper and on King TV’s Evening Magazine.
