Soccer superstars Fredy Montero and Osvaldo Alonso will help Snohomish County officially open its new Fairfield County Park, home to nine of the best soccer fields in the county, this Sunday at 2 p.m.
More than 140 soccer teams from throughout the region have been using the fields this week to play in the annual Sky River Soccer Tournament. The new 40-acre park answers a much needed call for additional soccer fields in Snohomish County.
Fairfield Park was the recipient of one of 10 YARD grants, a program created in 2007 by Snohomish County Executive Aaron Reardon to leverage public dollars and accelerate the development of new ball fields, playgrounds and youth amenities.
“Fairfield County Park is exactly the kind of partnership we’re looking for to help us speed up the development of new park facilities in Snohomish County,” Reardon said. “Our community deserves such amenities as quickly as possible to maintain and improve their quality of life.”
About $450,000 was distributed to private groups who leveraged that money with another $500,000 in community funds and volunteer labor to help improve or build new county park facilities. Snohomish County provided Sky River Soccer Club with a $75,000 matching grant in exchange for more than $125,000 in financial, human and community resources at the park. The soccer club and the county then co-developed more that 120 parking spaces.
The result is the successful development of the largest soccer complex in the Snohomish County park system. The Sky River Soccer Club also has agreed to maintain the fields, including mowing, watering, fertilizing, lining and preparing fields for games.
Montero and Alonso will help celebrate the field’s opening, then travel to the Evergreen State Fair, where they will sign autographs in support of Fiesta Sunday at the Fair. They will be located at the Comcast tent near the park’s main gate.
Fairfield County Park is located on Fryelands Boulevard, near Monroe. For more information on Snohomish County Parks and Recreation or this award, contact Parks Director Tom Teigen at 425-388-6600 or tom.teigen@snoco.org.
