Commissioner of Public Lands Goldmark announces employee award for Reiter Foothills effort

OLYMPIA – A group of 19 Washington State Department of Natural Resources (DNR) employees were honored recently for their leadership in completing the initial segment of off-road vehicle (ORV) trails at Reiter Foothills Forest this summer. DNR began construction of the initial section—1.4 miles of challenging, single-track motorcycle trail—in mid-June 2012 and completed it by the August 1, 2012, goal date.
In announcing the Supernova Award, which honors outstanding employee performance, Commissioner of Public Lands Peter Goldmark praised the DNR employees for enlisting members of the ORV, hiking, mountain biking, and equestrian communities in planning and building the project’s first phase.
“These DNR employees took initiative and acted decisively,” said Goldmark, who leads DNR. “They developed fresh ideas and approaches, while keeping the focus on teamwork to create a safe and sustainable recreation site that will appeal to a wide variety of outdoor enthusiasts.”
Those honored were: Lisa Anderson, Dennis Brown, Jim Cahill, Daniel Christian, Drake Harkness, Tony Holt, Ken Holz, Sue Jenson, Diana Lofflin, Mark Mauren, Al McGuire, Scott Minkler, Jim Patton, Luis Prado, Chris Robertson, Kirk Thomas, Jamie Turner, David Way, and Ron Whitehall.
Reiter Foothills Forest
Reiter Foothills Forest is a block of DNR-managed, forested state trust land about 30 miles east of Everett. Each year, thousands of visitors come to the area to enjoy off-road vehicle riding, horseback riding, hiking, and mountain biking. DNR is working with volunteers, Tribes and other agencies to protect streams and habitat by planning and developing sustainable motorized and nonmotorized trails.

DNR manages about 3 million acres of state-owned trust lands for revenue to trust beneficiaries including public schools, universities and public services in several counties. The department also manages about 2.6 million acres of aquatic lands, including bedlands under Puget Sound. Peter Goldmark is Washington’s 13th Commissioner of Public Lands since statehood in 1889.
