Great Catch, Right?

This one's been making the rounds.

Nope, that's not Neo's lesser-known sister moonlighting as a ball girl, that's a hoax.

Fun to watch though:)

Lake's Verdugo taken in MLB Draft

LSU Tiger LHP Ryan Verdugo, a 2005 LSHS grad.

Forgot to get to this over the weekend, but I was thrilled to see that my favorite baseball team (SF Giants) snatched up local product Ryan Verdugo in the 9th round of last weekend's draft.

Verdugo, a hard-throwing lefty starter for the Louisiana State Tigers, has had a spectacular first year in the South Eastern Conference. He's recovered nicely from 2005 Tommy John surgery and sports a 90 mph fastball and nice second level breaking pitches. The Bayou Bengals have advanced to the College World Series, and Verdugo's next start will be carried live on ESPN2 HD next Sunday, June 15 (Comcast channel 174).

Verdugo starred in the prep ranks as a Viking, earning three varsity letters and winning the state's sportsmanship and Mr. Baseball awards as a senior in 2005. He posted a 3-3 record and a 2.70 ERA, fanning 74 batters in just 43 innings of work.

Verdugo was drafted by the Phillies in the 43rd round out of high school, but elected to attend Skagit Valley CC, where he earned first team all-conference and second team all-state honors, compiling a 7-2 record (including a no-hitter) and a 2.74 ERA. Verdugo was drafted in the 45th round by the Giants last year, but elected to attend LSU instead of signing.

Fans of Verdugo will liekly get a shot at seeing him pitch later this summer. The SF Giants usually assign college-level prospects to the short-season Northwest League, where the Giants maintain a team in Salem, OR. Salem is in the same division as the Mariner's Everett Aquasox affiliate, and Everett typically hosts Salem six times per season.
