Beautiful weather brought out hundreds of Relay for Life supporters and tens of thousands of dollars donated over the weekend to help the American Cancer Society in their efforts to wipe out cancer and help those who suffer from the disease which affects millions of people in the United States each year.
While the 24-hour walk had many great moments the most inspiring were the Survivor lap which kicked off this second annual event in Lake Stevens and the Luminaria presentation.
Watching the sea of purple move together as they took their turn around the track was awe-inspiring to say the least. Realizing that all of those people have or are fighting cancer and most of them are from right here in Lake Stevens is overwhelming and makes me want to fight even harder to raise funds to help them through their struggle.
Most of the money raised in Snohomish County stays right here in Snohomish County which means that our hard earned dollars will help our neighbors and friends.
The Luminaria ceremony was beautiful! Lighted bags with names of loved ones who have either lost their battle to cancer, are still fighting or have beaten the disease were honored throughout the night and kept the track lit as Relayers continued their journey as the lights went out.
While this is only the second year that Relay for Life has been held in Lake Stevens my resolve to fight this disease grows stronger and I am glad I have Relay to help me in my journey.
I have had too many people close to me leave this earth because their bodies couldn’t fight for one more minute. I have seen the valiant fights of many as they overcame the disease that ravaged their bodies and I have been witness to the tears and heartbreak when a doctor has told someone I love that they have cancer.
I don’t want to have to continue to go through that and I don’t want my children, nieces, nephews or anyone else I know and love to have to hear those words. So, I will continue to celebrate those who are fighting, remember those I love who have lost their fight and I will fight for more birthdays—I will do this along with all of you who walked that track with me!
