Boy is it easy to accumulate clutter!  It comes from so many sources; we create collections, we receive gifts that we feel guilty parting with, our kids keep outgrowing toys and clothes and we even go out and shop for more stuff!

How do you get clutter under control?  To get out from under it, you’ve gotta part with it!  That doesn’t mean blindly throwing everything out.  What it does mean is you have to take time to really look at what you have in front of you and make decisions.  Decide on how useful the items still are to you and if it’s time to part with them, decide where they will be best put to use elsewhere.

Another way to get clutter under control is to just say “no” to yourself and to others!  When friends or family want to pass something on to you that they are done with, “no.”  When you see a great sale but you don’t really need any of the items, “no.”  When your sister wants to pass on all of her child’s toys to your child, “no.”  You can say, “no thank you” if you prefer-but you get the picture.

When it’s time for special occasions to roll around where you or family members in your home may be receiving gifts, let people know you would rather receive gifts of activities instead of material items.  Movie gift certificates, a membership to the zoo, a gift card to your favorite coffee spot, the choices are as varied as your interests.

Work today to get clutter under control so it doesn’t control you!
