Public needs to demand more from school boards
Dear Editor,
The Governor and State Superintendent were critical of our state not joining in the “Race-to-the-Top”, but they are wrong.
The idea that we should beg for our own money from the federal government is disgraceful.
The Secretary of Education wanted states to submit plans according to his idea of how education should be done is not how education and funding should be done. If we don’t like how our individual school district is operating, then we vote out our school board.
I do like many of the provisions that Secretary Duncan called for, like getting rid of ineffective teachers and more innovation/creative school plans, but to link it to federal funding was wrong.
Parents should demand more from our schools through our school boards, not the federal government.

Kiwanis Club enjoyed a great Aquafest weekend
Dear Editor,
The Lake Stevens Kiwanis Club Beverage Garden Committee would like to thank the volunteers that helped over Aquafest weekend, we couldn’t do this event as successfully without you. A big thank you goes to the Lake Stevens community for their continuing support of our event and also to all our Kiwanis members and their families for their commitment to this yearly fundraiser.
All proceeds from this event go back into the community in the form of scholarships, Christmas and Thanksgiving baskets for families in need, support for local athletic teams, Boy Scouts, food bank, bike helmets, school supplies, Lake Stevens Senior Center, Boys and Girls Club, community Easter Egg Hunt, and other needs as they arise.
Thank you again to all the wonderful people in the community and surrounding areas for your support. See you next year.
