King County made interesting news this week by passing a law that requires anyone on a river in the county must wear a lifejacket, even if in ankle deep and smooth water.
Another great example of the “Nanny State” mentality that says you are not smart enough or able to make your own choices, good and bad ones.
There are more laws like this one and the many passed by the state legislature that are similar and I wish to impose a new law myself.
All Washingtonians must exercise a minimum of three-days a week for at least an hour, the state will pay for gym memberships and fund it by placing a fee on McDonald’s cheeseburgers. We will create a new state agency that will track gym attendance and fines with possible jail time will be the punishment for disobeying the law.
I realize my new law example is ridiculous but is not far off what keeps coming from local county councils and the state legislature.
We cannot completely outlaw choice and individual liberty. I own my body and mind, I can make my own decisions and be responsible for my actions. It is time for the “Nanny State” to realize we are grown-up and to back off, great governing is not constantly passing laws, most of the time it is doing nothing and allowing us to live and therefore prosper.
