Ready or not school is back
in session
Today is the start of a new school year and kids are dressed to the nines with their backpacks full of supplies and butterflies flying around their stomachs. But this year may be a little different for some local students with construction going on at many of our schools.
Granite Falls High School students started the year out as normal but will soon be moving to their new and improved, and much larger facility this winter.
Andrea Peterson, Granite Fall’s own National Teacher of the Year, won’t yet be returning to her teaching duties but will still be fulfilling her duties as Teacher of the Year.
Lake Stevens School District is starting the year with enthusiasm and excitement as thousands of students walk through the doors for their first day back.
“We are thrilled to welcome back over 7,500 students to the 2007 - 2008 school year,” David Burgess, Lake Stevens School District Superintendent said
Lake Stevens High School too is under construction. Everything is going as planned, even with the fire that took place this summer, building is running smoothly.
The high school is less crowded this year with a whole class of freshmen starting their high school careers in the brand new Cavelero Mid-High School and eighth graders have joined the freshman class, leaving middle school a year earlier than before.
"There is nothing quite as exciting as opening a new school for the students in our community and Cavelero Mid High is a beautiful facility,” Burgess said..
Middle School students in Lake Stevens didn’t have any construction to deal with but they too were less crowded today with only sixth and seventh graders attending both North Lake and Lake Stevens Middle Schools.
Hillcrest and Mount Pilchuck elementary schools are both having major reconstruction and all students enjoyed their first day back in portable classrooms.
“We will continue working with our contractors through the fall on our various school projects and ask for your patience as Mt. Pilchuck and Hillcrest Elementaries are completely modernized this year,” Burgess said.
Mt. Pilchuck is now referred to as Camp Pilchuck and classrooms are known as cabins.
Each cabin, at both schools, is roomy and cool.
All other elementary schools are business as usual.
