Lake Stevens man takes home $250,000 in lottery winnings
Tom Thumb sells winning ticket “I had a client meeting so I was picking up pizzas and pop at the store and remembered I had a Mega Millions ticket in my wallet that I bought last week,” Barnes said. “I decided to check it, and when I scanned the ticket, the screen said ‘Winner! Please go to Lottery Office!’ I didn’t know what to make of it so I asked the clerk.”
The clerk quickly filled him in.
“She started fanning herself with her hand over and over saying in a breathless voice, ‘you won, oh my, you won’,” he said.
Barnes received a print out from Tom Thumb Grocery with the prize amount of $250,000. He immediately set out to find the Lottery office as quickly as possible.
“I went to the old Lottery office in Everett and so I called to find the new location and I got to the office as fast as I could, but I swear I hit every red light on the way there,” Barnes said.
When he got to the office and found out that he really had won, shock and excitement took hold. His palms began to sweat and his heart started racing. He couldn’t contain his excitement anymore so he decided to make a few phone calls.
“I called my wife, Kahala, and she was ecstatic,” Barnes laughed. “I also called a co-worker and my boss who congratulated me and said ‘Well that puts you in a new tax bracket!’”
After taking care of the taxes, Barnes says he plans to splurge on a couple luxuries.
“I’ve been eyeing a new truck for a while now; I think I might finally buy it,” he said. “I also want to pay off my wife’s car. I’m going to put a lot of it away though, so we have money when I decide to retire. Today, though, I am going out to celebrate!” Barnes exclaimed.
Barnes won the second tier Mega Millions drawing when he matched five of the six numbers in the Sept. 4 Mega Millions drawing to win the $250,000 tier two prize. He matched numbers 03-06-11-42-46. He only missed the Mega Ball number, which was 38.
