Halloween hauntings howled in downtown Lake Stevens

Kids of all ages tricked, treated and had a good time BY PAM STEVENS | EDITOR Mayor Vern “Dracula” Little wandered through downtown Lake Stevens as trick-or-treaters picked up candy and books and enjoyed games and snacks. Witches and goblins and little princesses lined the streets of Lake Stevens last Friday night in hopes of some good treats and a few tricks too. They were not disappointed.

Over a thousand people showed up to the annual Family Safe Downtown Halloween celebration which started the night with a costume parade that began at the Boys & Girls Club and continued on right down Main Street.

The night’s festivities included not only trick-or-treating at all of the local businesses, but a carnival of fun at the Lake Stevens Senior Center, where kids could fish for prizes, pick-up some freshly popped popcorn and play games to earn extra candy and treats.

There was even a real life haunted house (well, maybe not so haunted) and local firefighters and police were on hand with stickers and candy.
Family and friends lined the parking lot in front of Jay’s Market to get their pictures taken as a token of a hauntingly, fun Halloween night.

The Lions Club and the Kiwanis were on hand to pass out cookies and juice to all of those thirsty little monsters as they passed through the Downtown Center in search of spooky thrills and lots of chocolate. You could even pick up some books and play a game at Steve’s Barber Shop.

Adults could stop by the breezeway by the Lake Stevens Journal and Main Street Coffee and enjoy the samplings of some of the best chili in all of Lake Stevens as the Lake Stevens Family Center held its first annual chili cook-off to raise money for all of their community projects.
Winners of the cook-off were chosen by local sponsors and by those who paid a buck to judge the warm and toasty concoctions.

If you looked really hard, you could even find our own Mayor Vern Little scarring up kiddos as a very realistic vampire, with dripping blood and all.

This year’s Downtown Family Safe Halloween was a huge success. Can’t wait to see what they scare up for next year.
