Local fifth grader honored at University of Washington

Jarin Manuel, a 5th grader at Hillcrest Elementary School, was honored at a recognition ceremony held at Meany Hall on the University of Washington campus.

The program, Washington Search for Young Scholars (WSYS), was created by the Robinson Center at the University of Washington to identify regional academically advanced students in grades five through eight.

Manuel and other 5th graders were recognized for scoring in the top three percent of the WASL and/or COGaT in the state of Washington.  Through the Robinson Center, students have the opportunity to take advanced math and science courses during the summer providing challenging and fun experiences.

The program also offers students the opportunity for early entry to the University of Washington as full time students as early as 9th grade.  Manuel’s family and friends, as well as his teacher at Hillcrest, Mr. Alex Moll, were there to cheer him on at the ceremony.  Three students from North Lake Middle School and one student from Sunnycrest were also recognized.
