Adding to the
diversity in Granite Falls, is the new building for the Church of Jesus Christ
of Latter-Day Saints, (LDS), which is located at 18210 100th St. NE, directly
across the street from Granite Falls High School.
The new 16,500
square foot building is the home to over 575 local members of the congregation,
which covers both Granite Falls and parts of Lake Stevens.
Both leaders and
members are thrilled to be able to have a physical presence within the
community.
“From a personal
and religious standpoint, I think there is a spirit that permeates through the
community,” President Alan Whipple of the Snohomish Stake of the LDS Church
said. “Not only do we have a brick and mortar presence but also a good spirit
by having a dedicated church building.”
The building has 18
classrooms, a gymnasium, a small kitchen and a chapel that seats over 270
people. It also includes offices for Bishops to preside over three congregations.
“The glory of God
is intelligence,” Whipple said, explaining the abundance of classrooms, which
are used to teach members of all ages.
Sunday services
include an hour of Sacrament Meeting where the congregation meets together and
can sit as families, an hour where they break into age groups from 18 months
and up. The last hour members 12 and older are separated by gender and are
again focused on the teachings of the scriptures.
During the week the
building is used for Scouting, youth activities, and social gatherings for the
congregation.
A major focus of
the LDS Church is service and the members of the Granite Falls Ward look
forward to extending a hand in the community letting their neighbors know who
they are and what they believe.
“I think that now
as we go and do service, people in the community will
recognize us and having a home helps the community see we want to be inclusive
and shows them we want to be good neighbors,” Whipple said. “We also want the
community to know that we respect other churches and appreciate all they do.”
The building broke
ground in August 2008 and was dedicated on Sept. 27, 2009.
The Church of Jesus
Christ of Latter-Day Saints will be holding an Open House this Sunday, Oct. 18
from 4 p.m. to 7 p.m.
All those in the
community who would like to attend and walk through the new building are
welcome. Light refreshments will be served.
“We want people to
know that we are Christians, we believe in strengthening families and youth and
being a part of the community,” Whipple said.
Sunday worship
begins at 10 a.m. and visitors are welcome.
