Jeff Koehler is a writer, photographer, cook, traveler and a LSHS graduate, class of 1987.
Koehler studied at Gonzaga University in Spokane. He then spent the next four years traveling in Africa, Asia, the Middle East, and Asia.
“Food was as much of the joy and discovery as the people and places,” Koehler said.
Koehler then settled in London to do graduate work at King’s College London and the Royal Academy of Dramatic Art.
While studying in London, Koehler met his wife. He moved to Barcelona with her when she returned to do her Ph.D.
“For most of the past dozen years we have lived here (Barcelona). We have two young girls,” he said. “Barcelona is home, though I continue to travel widely and frequently.”
Koehler has written for many magazines and newspapers, including Gourmet, Saveur, Food & Wine, EatingWell, the Los Angeles Times, Washington Post, Atlantic Monthly on-line, Christian Science Monitor, Dwell, Virtuoso Life and Afar.
In 2008, Koehler won a North American Travel Journalists Association award along with chef Andre Soltner for a piece they did on cruising.
“For me food is an ideal subject because writing about it, especially here in the Mediterranean, is writing about culture. It is the window through which almost any story can be told,” he said.
Koehler’s second book, Rice Pasta Couscous, published in Fall of 2009, explores these staple foods of the
Mediterranean.

“At my mother-in-law’s table in Barcelona I learned how a simple staple (rice in the form of her seafood paella) could be transformed into something not only sublimely delicious but also an anchor to both family and community,” Koehler said. “Everything, it seems, passes through the paella. So enamored with the concept that I wrote a book about it.”
Koehler will be at J.Matheson Gifts, Kitchen & Gourmet at 2609 Colby Ave. on Nov. 6 from 6 p.m. to 7 p.m. for a book signing. For more information please call 425-258-2287.
