No more staying home on Friday nights wishing you were cheering on the Vikings. The newly built football stadium will now seat double the amount of people that it previously held.
Just one year ago, less than 1,500 fans were able to cheer their team on at Lake Stevens High School but the new and improved stadium now seats over 3,000.
The 2005 bond measure, which paid for the building of Cavelero Mid-High, updates and improvements at Hillcrest, Mt. Pilchuck and Sunnycrest Elementary schools and renovations at Lake Stevens High School, also paid for the stadium, which came in under budget making it possible to also build eight tennis courts and additional parking.
“Because of the construction climate, we were also able to put in locker rooms,” Robb Stanton, Director of Facilities and Operations said. “It was enough that we would have the capital to do the tennis courts.”
The total cost of the stadium was $7 million. $5.5 million in construction costs and the remaining $1.5 in fees and other costs.
Guests at last week’s open house toured the new locker rooms, press boxes and even the bathrooms.
Women were especially pleased with the 20 bathroom stalls, compared to only four in the old stadium.
As you enter the stadium the new purple score board catches your eye, with the beautiful backdrop of he trees and mountains behind it.
In addition to holding football, soccer and track competitions, the larger facility now makes it possible for Lake Stevens to host play-off games.
“We can hold more events because we have more room,” Stanton explained. “We will be able to satisfy the number of people who come here to Lake Stevens.”
If you didn’t get a chance to attend the open house, there will be a grand opening ceremony on Friday, Sept. 17 when the Vikings host their first home game of the season against Inglemoor.
The event will be complete with fireworks and a presentation at half-time.
The stadium facility will be available for public rental and track key purchase effective September 20.
