The kids in the Cavelero Mid High School Drama Club have been preparing all year for their upcoming production of Maul of the Dead.
With zombies being high on the popularity list these days, the cast and crew chose to produce the dark comedy which was written by Mitch Brian.
“When I first found out which play the kids had chosen I wasn’t very happy,” teacher and director Katerina Kubesova said. “But, we are targeting the students that go to this school.”
The play is being produced by ninth grader Steven Ortiz.
“I like working backstage and being the person behind the scenes,” Ortiz said.
The drama club has been preparing for this show since the beginning of the school year.
“In between plays we have meetings and acting classes,” one of the play’s stars, Rae Heffernan said.
Their original drama club advisor had to pull out in the middle of the year. Ortiz decided to ask Kubesova if she would mind filling in. She hesitated at first but soon relished the opportunity. Kubesova is here on a Fulbright Teacher Exchange grant to promote excellence in teaching, cultural understanding and community leadership. She teaches at Pierre de Coubertin High School in Tábor, the Czech Republic.
“At first I thought it was just about a bunch of kids having fun,” she said. “I now see that the students have to be willing to take on all of the responsibilities and fulfill them.”
A little about the play: Six strangers take refuge in an abandoned shopping mall, only to find zombies lurk behind every mannequin and rubber tree plant. The motley crew of survivors include a temperamental punkrock chick, two high-powered SWAT team agents, a local TV weather woman, and a traffic chopper dude who seek to find ‘a morning after’ in a deadly paradise of consumer goods as the world crumbles around them.
The play will be performed at Cavelero Mid High School on Friday, May 6 at 8 p.m. Tickets are $4. You can view the trailer on facebook at Cavelero Drama Club – Running Colt Productions.
