There were several Memorial Day services last Monday to honor and celebrate those who have given their lives to ensure our freedoms here in this country.
The American Legion Post 181 and the Women’s Auxilliary handed poppies out at local grocery stores. Donations were accepted.
The poppies referred to in the poem In Flanders Fields are a reminder to the profusion of poppies which sprouted in Flanders in the disturbed earth of the battlefields and cemetaries where war casualites were buried during World War I.
American Legion Post 181 also held a Memorial Day service at the War Memorial (left) in downtown Lake Stevens on Monday.
After the service at the War Memorial there was also a full service at the Machias Cemetary which also included the playing of “Taps” as part of the service.
