In 1969 ‘The Chicken’ was stolen from atop the roof of the Chicken Drive-In at Frontier Village and started quite a tradition.
It has appeared at various high school activities, especially around graduation time, homecoming, class reunions, and even a few weddings and a funeral.

One of the Class of 1969 seniors who originally stole it was Burnie Palmer.  In 1988 his daughter, Angie Palmer (Girard), was able to retrieve it along with her brother Sean.

This year the tradition is being carried on with Angie’s sons Mitch Girard, Class of 2011, and brothers Kolby and Nathan.
Most of the people today don’t understand what a chicken has to do with the high school when a Viking is the mascot.
Well, it was something that started 42 years ago and for some reason has lived on through three generations, and hopefully for many more years to come.
