My name is Deborha Petruzzi, Co-Chair Publicity Committee Relay for Life of Lake Stevens 2012. I am a mother of two and have lived in Lake Stevens for eight years. I love to volunteer in my community and I am currently Ms. Washington American Renaissance 2012.

I was first introduced to Relay for Life by a very close friend of mine, Linda Elledge Chair of Publicity 2011, our first Relay of Lake Stevens. I was invited to volunteer for the Publicity Committee and I asked, “What is that?” She said it is one of the largest fundraisers for The American Cancer Society. So, I went to the first Relay for Life of Lake Stevens Committee Kick Off. After hearing everyone’s reasons why they Relay, I knew this was for me.

When I was very young I had my first child. During my pregnancy I was diagnosed with Cancer Cells. The doctors said not to worry that it was common for cancer cells to become somewhat active due to the hormones and would go away after the pregnancy. One and two months after the cancer cells began to grow rapidly.

I went for the first procedure which failed and the cancer grew back. A couple of months later the doctors tried a different procedure, which was successful. Soon after I discovered Cervical, Ovarian and Breast Cancer is hereditary in the women of my family.

That was a very interesting year for me because soon after the doctor found a large lump in my breast. At 16 years old that is a lot to take in. After my mammogram, they said it was non-cancerous. For 26 years I have been cancer free. Because of the American Cancer Society and the researchers who research to find ways to fight cancer, I was able to have my two youngest children Jessica and Dyllan.

I also Relay for the families who are fighting cancer and the families who will, for our brothers, our sisters, our mothers, our fathers, our aunts and uncles, our friends and our neighbors.  I hope to see you at our 2012 Relay for Life of Lake Stevens on May19-20 at the Lake Stevens High School football field.
