Home safety surveys and smoke alarm installations will soon be administered by Lake Stevens Fire. LSF has been awarded these alarms through the Vision 20/20 Grant. This grant provides the ability to install 200 smoke alarms, 20 hearing-impaired smoke alarms, and perform home safety surveys for families located within the Lake Stevens response area.
The home safety surveys consist of testing/installing smoke alarms, identifying potential fire hazards, and helping residents create an escape plan to be used in case they were in an emergency situation.
According to the U.S. Fire Administration (USFA), 81 percent of all fire deaths and 76 percent of all fire injuries occurred in residential buildings. Each year there is an estimated:
• 365,500 residential building fires reported to U.S. fire departments
• 2,560 deaths
• 13,275 injuries
• $6.6 billion in property loss
Preventing fires is a year round commitment that the entire community must make. People rely on firefighters to fight fires once they occur, however the prevention of fires is up to everyone in the community. If the community works together to prevent fires, they can help lower fire statistics.
Home safety surveys give the community the opportunity to work together with their local firefighters to learn about fire hazards in the home and learn how they can remove these hazards. Public Educator Jennye Cooper commented, “We are very excited to introduce this program to our community and work with residents to help them identify any hazards in the home and potential resources.”
