North West Masters Regionals, held this year at Vancouver Lake, is the largest regional regatta in the U.S. North Cascades Crew of Lake Stevens was one of 47 clubs competing from eight states and Canada. Rowers compete by age with handicaps in races with multiple age groups.
Jen Huffman and Wendy Clark took first place, a gold medal, in the Women’s 2XB division. Competing against younger rowers paid off for Jen and Wendy with a third place bronze in the Women’s 2XA race.
Success also came in the single races. In the Women’s 1XC group Jen Huffman earned a first place gold medal and in the 1XA a second place silver. Kat Runyon won a third place bronze in the Women’s 1XF. Ben McIsaac, competing against men from 21 to 54 years old, took home a second place silver medal in the Lightweight AA D1X.
North Cascades Crew (NCC) was established in 2008 by a passionate group of area rowers with a desire to introduce and share the many benefits of the sport in a safe and supportive environment. NCC offers both Adult and Youth rowing programs open to all levels of athletic ability, experience and pursuits; beginners to advanced levels both recreational and competitive. Coach Fleming Brainerd brings over 10 years of experience and dedication to the program. The small sized program offers the opportunity for an individualized approach in the development of each rower.
