Citing the benefits of critical thinking, rigorous inquiry and a respectful exchange of ideas, Pastor Gary Jensen of Zion Lutheran Church in Snohomish, Washington (http://zionsno.ctsmemberconnect.net ) extended an invitation to debate with the Humanists of North Puget Sound (www.humanistsnps.org ).

Robert Ray, president of the HNPS happily accepted the invitation. Jim Corbett, a member of HNPS, who has represented the HNPS in previous debates was selected to debate for HNPS.

Pastor Jensen said, “I am excited to help stage this discussion in order to support academic liberty and free inquiry, and for the purpose of promoting among young people the love of the sciences and the broader liberal arts.”
He described himself as being well acquainted with the positions of Stephen Hawking, Richard Dawkins, Daniel Dennett, and other leading humanists.

Corbett, of Edmonds, expressed his enthusiasm as well, stating, “I’m happy for the opportunity to represent the views of Humanists in a very positive context. Recent polls have shown that there is a real upswing in interest in Humanism and I’d like to support anyone, especially young people, who have questions about it by providing solid answers.”
The moderator for the debate will be Dr. Jeffrey Mallinson, Academic Dean and Professor of Philosophy and Theology at Trinity Lutheran College in Everett, WA.

The event will be held on Monday evening, May 14. Doors open at 6:30 p.m. with the debate running from 7 to 9 at Snohomish High School, Snohomish, in the beautiful new, state-of-the-art Snohomish Performing Arts Center, located at 1316 5th St., Snohomish.

Admission fee will be $1 for students, $3 for adults. Proceeds will help offset the costs of hosting the event.
