Lake’s boys got off to a good start of the 2011-12 basketball season, winning 63-53 at Liberty in Issaquah on November 29, and by 60-42 over Marysville-Getchell in the home opener last Thursday.

Lake, favored in the coaches’ poll to win the 4A Wesco league title (and a shot at advancing to the State Tournament in March), features a balanced lineup with overall good size.
Balance? How about NINE double-figure scorers in its first two games?
Lake 63, Liberty (Issaquah) 53
Against Liberty, after trailing by 24-11 at the end of the first quarter, Lake steadily took command of the game and pulled away in the second half.
Guard Kevin Smith notched 20 points, followed by Jared Rahn and Loren Vandegrift with 11 each and Devin Stoen and Dakota Tomson with 10 apiece. Vandegrift, Lake’s 6-8 center, pulled down 15 rebounds. Key to Lake’s victory was its commiting just seven turnovers and making 79 percent of its free throws.
Lake 60 Marsville-Getchell 42
Turnovers (26) and free throws (12 of 26) were a problem against Marysville-Getchell, a school playing in its first full Wesco 3A season, but Lake’s scoring balance and overall superiority led the way to a relatively easy, if very ragged, win.
Lake led 14-10 at the quarter break and blew the game open with an 18-4 second quarter margin, during which period M-G missed all 10 of its field goal tries.
Vandegrift again posted a double-double with 11 points and 11 rebounds; he also had four blocked shots.
Rahn, with 17 points, was Lake’s leading scorer (he made six of eight field goals and five of eight free throws, plus three steals).
Thomson scored 14 points along with six assists and four steals.
Stoen had 11 points, four assists and seven rebounds.
