DECA students at the Lake Stevens Safeway annual Takeover.

What is DECA? Well it’s more than just an Association of Business and Marketing students. It’s where opportunities are revealed, where the doors to your future are opened, and a chance where you can expand your social group and grow as a family.

The organization prepares future leaders and entrepreneurs for careers and education in marketing, finance, hospitality, management, and other business areas.

DECA has been around since 1946, and it has definitely left its mark in this world!
November includes DECA week! For those who do not know what DECA week is, it is a week where DECA students have the chance to show their spirit throughout the week by taking part in fun activities, participating in professional days, and promoting DECA. The goal is to raise awareness of this awesome organization.

• Starting Tuesday, students wore business suits and professional attire.
• Wednesday was DECA dress day, where students wore any clothing that has the DECA logo or print.
• On Thursday, students sported an ugly tie as a fun activity.

• On Friday, to finish up DECA week, we had the DECA diamond (logo) for signing, marking a new tradition. Students from all grades in the high school signed the diamond and it they hung the diamonds in the DECA hallway.

On Saturday, December 8, DECA hosted the annual Safeway Takeover. With DECA’s Public Relations, they started planning for the event the day they walked into school, spending countless hours of preparation and establishing communications so that DECA students could experience a true job shadow of Safeway employees.

During this event, students had the opportunity to job shadow an employee, gaining experience in the employee’s job field. For instance, students may help a customer bag groceries, help ring up a customer, learn how to become a barista, shadow the store manager, prepare drinks in Jamba Juice, create bouquets, and much more.

The decision of joining DECA is one of the best choices to make because DECA is where valuable experiences are gained, where the opportunities are revealed, where multiple events are available to participate in, where networking starts and relations are built, and where the creation of innovation begins.
