Southwest Annexation Q & A
For those of you in the proposed Southwest Annexation area of Lake Stevens, here are few simple questions and answers to help guide you through how this annexation affects you.
What is annexation? Annexation is the process to bring an area within a City’s Urban Growth Boundary into the City limits.
Who decides on annexation of the Southwest area? Qualified Registered Voters living within the proposed annexation area will have an opportunity to vote during the upcoming November 3 ballot.
What will it mean for police and fire protection? If annexation occurs, police protection services will be provided by the City of Lake Stevens Police Department. Following annexation the Lake Stevens Police Department will add 13 new positions to bring the annexation area up to an urban level of service.
Fire Protection services will continue to be provided by Lake Stevens Fire and will not change.
How will this affect taxes?Over the years the city and county property tax rates have been comparable.
In 2009 the property tax rate per $1,000 assessed value in Lake Stevens is $9.72 and $9.62 for the unincorporated areas.
The City has a five percent – six percent utility tax on some services, however surface water charges are lower in the City limits. Water and sewer rates are the same both inside the City and in the annexation area.
Will annexation affect where my children go to school? No, annexation does not affect which school your children attend; both the current City limits and the annexation area are served by the LSSD.
