I-90 closures and construction wrap up for the winter east of Snoqualmie Pass
HYAK – As winter takes hold in the mountains, construction crews on I-90 east of Snoqualmie Pass will wrap up work this week and take a break until next spring. Drivers will get a temporary reprieve from the nightly hour-long closures for rock blasting.
The Washington State Department of Transportation (WSDOT) expects to have I-90 back to normal by Nov. 5. A half-mile detour with narrow shoulders will remain in place through the winter at the Gold Creek bridges near Hyak.
Contractor crews will continue to work along the project to prep the area for winter. Drivers may experience minor delays as crews move equipment across I-90.
Since May, crews have excavated approximately 500,000 tons of rock (out of 1.3 million tons) from the slopes adjacent to I-90. This will make room to widen I-90 from four to six lanes. Crews also began construction on new, wider bridges over Rocky Run and Gold Creek.
This four-year project (I-90 Snoqualmie Pass East - Hyak to Keechelus Dam Project) lays the groundwork for a wider, safer and more reliable I-90 east of Snoqualmie Pass.
More than 27,000 vehicles travel over Snoqualmie Pass on weekdays and traffic volumes can double on weekends and holidays. The additional lanes will improve traffic flow and accommodate more drivers, and the new bridge design connects wildlife habitats under the highway.
WSDOT also rehabilitated approximately nine miles of deteriorated pavement on I-90 east of Snoqualmie Pass this year through the I-90 Lake Easton to Bullfrog and I-90 Keechelus Dam to Cabin Creek projects.
