OSHA presents VPP Star Award to NAVSTA Everett

The U.S. Labor Department's Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) recognized Naval Station Everett as one of 30 organizations state-wide with a Voluntary Protection Program (VPP) Star Award. The naval station is the second in Snohomish County to receive the designation for their safety program and record.

OSHA presented the award and VPP flag to Naval Station Everett's Commanding Officer, Capt. Michael Coury, during a ceremony at Jackson Plaza Oct. 27.

"This flag represents the culmination of our efforts over the past three years, but it is not an ending," said Coury. "This is just the beginning of our commitment to excellence in safety program management."

Naval Station Everett was awarded the VPP star award after undergoing a rigorous onsite evaluation by a team of safety and health professionals, and proving the base's ability to implement effective safety and health management systems and exceed all OSHA standards in areas including hazard prevention and control, worksite analysis, training, and management commitment and worker involvement.

"I especially want to thank our safety team for their hard work and diligent efforts in leading us through to achieving the highest possible Star status that the Occupational Safety and Health Administration can bestow," said Coury.

During the ceremony, Ikeda said his evaluation team was impressed by the level of commitment that the naval station demonstrated. He mentioned that they were particularly impressed by the base's VPP passport system, which encourages employee participation in the program, and the Enterprise Safety Applications Management System (ESAMS) program, which effectively tracks training, hazard corrections, and other important measures.

"The VPP has reserved the award for employers that achieve exemplary safety and health programs," said Dean Ikeda, Acting Regional Administrator for the U.S Department of Labor, OSHA, Region X, Seattle, Wash. "It goes to the best of the best."
