Local woman Lottie Miller competed in the Ironman 70.3 World Championships in Clearwater, Florida on November 13.

In August, Miller competed in the Ironman 70.3 held in Lake Stevens and qualified for the championship event. She qualified with a time of 5:30:58 which placed Miller fifth in her age group.

“A lot of people qualified for championships that day, there were fifty age group slots up for grabs, what makes me different from the rest is that I am a resident of Lake Stevens,” Miller said.

Miller has been participating in triathalons for four years. Taking part in seven 70.3 races, which are half the distance of an Ironman. This year alone Miller completed five triathlons and is signed up for her first full Ironman at Coeur D’Alene next June.

Training for a triathlon can take up to 12 to 14 hours a week, including twice a day workouts on five out of seven days. Miller also runs Whitman Global Carpet and Floor Care out of Woodinville, Wash.

“I have more than once pulled over on the side of the road while riding my bike to take a phone call from a client or employee. Running a company is a lot like an Ironman, it takes consistent dedication to training (customers) while not overlooking your diet (employees),” Miller said.

Miller began her relationship with triathlons in 2007.

“I was at the gym taking a spin class and someone asked me if I had ever thought about doing a triathlon. I said no, but then the idea took root and about six months later I was signed up and on the starting line of my first race,” she said.

She enjoys the bike portion of triathlons most, stating that it is her strength.

“That is the place where when you are good at it, and I am, you can get very far ahead which helps make up for my weakness which is running,” Miller explained.
