SEATTLE – A workgroup focused on State Route 520 meets Dec. 1 to discuss transit planning and financing, and a Washington Park Arboretum mitigation plan, as part of the state’s effort to rebuild the highway and improve travel times between I-5 and Redmond.
Earlier this year the state Legislature directed a workgroup to consider refinements to the Washington State Department of Transportation’s (WSDOT) SR 520 preferred alternative from I-5 to Medina. When Gov. Chris Gregoire announced the preferred alternative in April, she acknowledged that the legislation, ESSB 6392, called for design refinements, transit planning and financing, and a mitigation plan for effects to the arboretum.
Recommendations about transit planning and financing will be posted online Wednesday afternoon, and WSDOT, King County Metro and Sound Transit will accept comments Dec. 1-15. During that same time, WSDOT also will accept comments on the draft Washington Park Arboretum mitigation plan. Comments will be accepted at the meeting, as well as online, by e-mail or mail. The mitigation plan will also be part of the I-5 to Medina project’s final environmental impact statement, scheduled to be published in spring 2011. A final report from the workgroup will be submitted to Gov. Gregoire and the state Legislature by Dec. 31, 2010.
