WSDOT honors fallen workers at March 22 memorial

March 21, 2011

OLYMPIA – The 2011 Worker Memorial is scheduled for Tuesday, March 22, to honor Washington State Department of Transportation (WSDOT) workers who have lost their lives in work zone-related activities.

This year’s event includes a special tribute to WSDOT worker Billy “Bud” Rhynalds, who was killed on Highway 203 south of Carnation, in January. His family will receive a special presentation and his coworkers will unveil a plaque in his honor at the WSDOT headquarters building.

Since 1950, 59 WSDOT employees have lost their lives in work zone-related activities. WSDOT hosts a Worker Memorial each year to honor its fallen workers, recognize all roadway workers and remind everyone about the importance of work zone safety.

Representatives from local and national transportation groups, along with roadway partners from law enforcement and the contracting community will be available for interviews.

WSDOT will also be participating in National Work Zone Awareness Week and encourages all to Go Orange for Work Zone Safety April 4-8. This national event encourages everyone to pay attention in work zones and help save lives. More information is at http://www.wsdot.wa.gov/safety/brake/.
