Pilchuck students Relay for Relay

May 9, 2011

Students and staff at Mt. Pilchuck Elementary walk for Relay for Life.

Students and staff at Mt. Pilchuck Elementary walked the track behind their school all day last Friday, May 6.

Each class took a turn walking for 15 minutes. As their time ended, they passed the Spirit Stick to the next class. In all, students were walking continually for the entire five hour day.

During the past several years, several staff members have battled cancer including past principal, Trudi Spierling.

“We would like to walk in memory of Trudi Spierling, our principal for many years, who lost her battle to cancer,” second grade teacher Brenda Dykgraaf said. “We would also like to walk to support Brandy (Missroon), the lunch money lady, who is fighting with everything she has to beat cancer.”

Students and parents were able to send donations if they chose to. Students were also able to write the name of someone they love who has suffered from cancer on a purple heart.

The hearts were attached to posters the kids carried on their walks.

At the end of the day all of the money collected was presented to Missroon to add to her fundraising efforts for Relay for Life Lake Stevens which takes place this Saturday and Sunday.

“I think that this money will really bless her,” Dykgraaf said about Missroon.

The event gave students an opportunity to see what Relay for Life is all about and was organized by Dykgraaf who is also a cancer survivor.

“We know cancer has touched so many families and would like to give you and your child a chance to walk in support of finding a cure,” Dykgraaf told parents in a letter.

Dykgraaf, Missroon and other staff and students will be participating in Relay for Life Lake Stevens this weekend.
