‘Support Our Troops’ rally
On Armed Forces Day, Saturday, May 21, American Legion Post 181 invites all active duty military and their families to join with Legion members, other veterans, and the community for the fifth-annual photo and flyover.
This year there will also be a barbeque and live music to honor the troops and their families.
The event will be held at the War Memorial located at 1808 124th Ave. NE in downtown Lake Stevens starting at 12 noon.
After the community picture is taken, the Blackjack Flying Club will perform a special flyover that includes the “Missing Man” formation, weather permitting.
The Blackjacks are professional pilots based out of Arlington Airport who are former military or commercial aviators. They are the only ones certified in the area besides active-duty military to fly in formation.
The “Missing Man” flyover started back in World War II. When a plane with her crew was shot down during a mission, the squadron returned with an empty spot where the plane normally would be.
The vacant position could be seen for miles before landing and identified the specific aircraft. By leaving that position empty it honored the missing crewmen.
Currently the formation is used to honor military at funerals, memorials, or other events. For Armed Forces Day on Saturday it will be an aerial salute to the military members living in the local area.
The barbeque is free for those who participate in the photo and observe the flyover.
People are encouraged to wear red, white, and blue. Support Our Troops posters will be given away. The picture that is taken will be posted online at the Legion’s website so everyone can access it and email it to military members around the country and around the world.
The American Legion and the Auxiliary will also have information about Blue Star Service Banners for the families of the men and women who are currently serving in the Navy, Army, Marines, Air Force, Coast Guard, the Reserves, or the National Guard. Arrangements will be made to provide a Blue Star Service Banner for any Lake Stevens area family who has someone currently serving from their household.
