I will continue to Relay, please join me

May 16, 2011

The weekend started out with sun shining down on all of the hundreds of people who showed up to the first ever Relay for Life Lake Stevens and although before the sun went down for the night, rain started to fall, teams continued to support the event and kept walking around the track at Lake Stevens High School until the sun rose again in the east.

Those 24-hours were life changing for me, my daughter, my son and all of the others who moved forward, step-by-step, to support The American Cancer Society and those we have seen battle cancer in our lives.

Knowing that each dollar raised will go to help someone else celebrate another birthday is why all 800 of us continued our laps.

Lake Stevens stepped up, like it always does, and made this event spectacular —to say the very least. It is because of a community like ours that our friends and neighbors will have the tools to fight back while battling this disease.

I want to personally thank Kim Demary and her team of hard-working, passionate people who made this event possible. Their efforts are truly priceless and their enthusiasm was contagious.

The businesses that stepped up and supported this event need to be thanked too. Please support these businesses so that they can continue to help next year.

Thanks to those men who dressed up in drag for the Mr. Relay contest. They made us laugh and raised a lot of money for Relay for Life.

Watching the survivors in their purple shirts, walk the track to open this Relay for Life, was one of the highlights for me.

But the most bittersweet moment was the lighting of the luminaria. Seeing all of the bags memorializing someone’s battle with cancer brought everything home – the realization that cancer really does affect everyone, somehow.

If you didn’t participate this year, you will definitely want to be a part of it next year.

Don’t miss your opportunity to “Celebrate, Remember and Fight Back.”
