Garage Organizing as Easy as 1-2-3

Well, it’s that time of year again, the weather is warm and the garage doors are open revealing your secrets to all those who pass. The broken bikes, the unused gym equipment that was supposed to have you buff in time for summer, the boxes from your move two years ago and countless items that just never found a home.

How do you get a handle on all that stuff and, dare to say, park in the garage again? Don’t feel overwhelmed, don’t worry, just follow these three easy steps to take control of your garage.

Organizing Step # 1: Choose a date for your project and mark it off on your calendar. Don’t leave it up to chance to get it done-plan for it and make it happen. This is the time to recruit helpers so they can put it on their calendars too.

Organizing Step # 2: Time to sort and purge. On organizing day, pull everything out of the garage and place items of the same type together so you can see just how much you have. That means outdoor equipment together, tools together, camping gear together, etc. Have lots of bags or boxes labeled for donation and garbage as you make your decisions. Be sure to have a donation pick-up already scheduled.

Organizing Step # 3: Create homes and containerize. Once you know what you are going to keep, store items of the same type together. Set your garage up like a store. Have a camping section, a holiday section, a woodworking section-whatever applies to your garage. Use sturdy bins with lids for storage and label clearly.

Garage organizing can be as easy as 1-2-3 when you have a plan!
