Northbound I-5 reopens near Burlington

August 1, 2011

BURLINGTON – Just in time for the weekend, all lanes of northbound Interstate 5 reopened at 11 a.m. today after a week of work that left only one lane open between Burlington and Bellingham.

During the 87-hour lane closure, the Washington State Department of Transportation (WSDOT) replaced two bridge approaches, repaired several bridge decks and reinforced 2.5 miles of aging concrete panels by tying them together with 6,000 steel dowel bars. Crews also paved more of the 12-mile project zone with asphalt. Pictures of the work are available on Flickr.

WSDOT is repairing and repaving 12 miles of northbound I-5 this summer. Work will continue for the next couple months with weeknight lane and ramp closures. Crews will put the final layer of asphalt on northbound I-5 and pave all northbound and southbound access ramps through the project zone. They will install guardrail, restripe the roadway and add rumble strips.

Keep an eye on the project website or subscribe for the WSDOT Skagit County newsletter to stay informed about plans for lane and ramp closures.
