Viking ā€œDā€ Shines at Monroe in 33-7 win

October 11, 2011

Lake Stevens Football is now 6-0 for the 2011 - 2012 season after beating Monroe last Friday.

Award the Viking defense the game ball for this win. Lake came out on top at Monroe by 33-7 last Friday but the offense, for the first time so far this season, sputtered for an entire half.

More specifically, give that game ball to senior linebacker Korey Young, who turned in one of the best games of his sterling Viking career.

In the first half Nelson completed 10 of 12 passes for 154 yards and two touchdowns and gained 36 yards in five carries including another score as Lake outgained Monroe (4-2 and 2-1) by 206-97 before intermission.

The second half was a very different story in the stats department. The Bearcats, perhaps inspired by their Homecoming halftime festivities (or just sick of being pushed around by the Vikings) outgained Lake by 119-69 in the final two quarters, scoring the half's only offensive TD.

Despite Lake's meager offense in the second half (two first downs) the outcome of the game was never in doubt, thanks to two "pick-sixes" interceptions for touchdowns.

Young, who inspires with his leadership, toughness and hard work, overcame what was initially diagnosed as a career-ending leg and knee injury at the end of last year's season. His remarkable recovery paves the way for him to become an all-time Viking career leader in tackles made.

Young's touchdown capped a super game for the much-liked and well-respected Viking captain. He registered 21 tackles in spearheading a defensive team effort which held Bearcat running back Jordan Moore to just 70 net yards in 27 carries, ruining Monroe's game plan of controlling the ball via the rush. Lake limited Monroe to 77 net yards in 38 carries, as six different Vikings had a hand in sacking Bearcat QB Hunter Bingham.

Not a pretty win but good enough to all but wrap up the Wesco North title for the Vikings, who face a perilous test against Marysville (Homecoming) this Friday, followed by the regular season closer at Stanwood and then the Playoffs.
