Community Transit Board to host public hearing on 2012 budget
The Community Transit Board of Directors will host a public hearing on the agency’s proposed 2012 budget at its regular monthly meeting at 3 p.m. Thursday, Nov. 3.
The hearing will take place in the Community Transit Board Room, located at 7100 Hardeson Road, Everett (accessible by Everett Transit Route 8).
The proposed 2012 budget includes $106.6 million in operating revenues, and cuts operating expenses by $15.5 million dollars, mostly in the form of a 20 percent service cut effective Feb. 20, 2012.
The service cut is necessary to adjust to continued low sales tax collections due to slow economic recovery from the recession. Sales tax revenues are forecast to increase just 1 percent in 2012 and an average of only 3 percent annually through 2017.
The proposed 2012 budget includes elimination of 103 full-time equivalent (FTE) positions to reduce expenses. Combined with 20 layoffs in 2011 and 83 in 2010, a total of 206 FTEs, or 29 percent of the total workforce will have been eliminated in a 26-month period. The 2012 budget also includes a proposal for a fare increase in September 2012, which likely would go before the board for public comment in spring 2012.

Also at the Nov. 3 meeting, the board will hear an update of Community Transit’s Six-Year Transit Development Plan, covering the years 2012 to 2017.
