Family fighting cancer...again
Last year we told you about Sarah Lien, 24, the young newlywed who was battling breast cancer and her mother Barbara Hawkins who had battled with the disease in both 1994 and again in 2008.
This family has been through more than most families when it comes to fighting this disease and their battle is not over.
While Lien, is on the road to recovery, her mother has been diagnosed with stage 4 incurable breast cancer.
“Celebrating what was thought to be the end of their cancer journey their family started talking about taking a family vacation to celebrate life and leave cancer behind. Then the unthinkable happened,” good friend Sherri Pribble-Jones said. “Barb found a lump on her right side. After having surgery removing the lump as well as 38 lymph nodes the pathology report detected all nodes being positive and cancerous.”
The Hawkins’ journey into the battle field of breast cancer started in 1994 when Hawkins underwent lumpectomy surgery on her left breast followed by radiation and was cancer free for 14 years.
In 2008 she had another battle with breast cancer, which resulted in a double mastectomy and followed with chemotherapy.
“A few weeks after Barb’s completion of treatment and reconstructive surgery her daughter Sarah was diagnosed with stage 3 breast cancer,” Pribble-Jones said. “Sarah underwent chemotherapy, double mastectomy, radiation and reconstructive surgery.”
Hawkins now begins the 16-week process of chemotherapy treatments followed with radiation to her right side. Her prognosis is not good.
“The Hawkins family feels they need to exhaust every possibility in treatment to prolong Barb’s life,” Pribble-Jones explained. ”This family has suffered more than what most of us can even imagine while displaying amazing courage and perseverance. It is hard to comprehend their pain and suffering, they need our love and support.”
Pribble-Jones has started a fund so that the Hawkins family can go on a cruise together and to help with the cost of Hawkins’ finances while Barb is off of work.
“Our goal is to raise enough money to send them on their family cruise they so desired,” Pribble-Jones said.
Donations can be made at any Key Bank under the Barbara Hawkins Cancer Fund. Checks can also be mailed to 7321 24th St SE Lake Stevens, WA 98258 payable to Barbara Hawkins Cancer Fund.
