I am lucky enough to be one of the many women in business and I couldn’t be happier. Everyday I get to make people’s smiles both healthier and more beautiful. Owning your own small business is definitely a lot of hard work and it doesn’t stop when you get home, but every minute is worth it.

Being able to pick extraordinary people to work with is priceless. The women I work with are some of the smartest and most forward thinking people I have ever met. I enjoy every aspect of both dentistry and business and rarely does a day go by that I haven’t learned something new. My desire to have my own business started at a very young age and I honestly have my mother to thank.

My older sister and I were raised by my mother in a small town in Eastern Washington. My mother was easily one of the hardest working people I have ever known. She worked two full time jobs and a weekend job to support us. After a nice long 16 hour day of work she would come home to a 6-year-old very patiently waiting to do her 60 minutes of reading out loud assignments and she never complained or fell asleep!

One of the things she said to me at a very young age was, you can do anything you set your mind to. My mother told me this several times and around age 6 I realized she was right. I was going to be a doctor, I didn’t know what kind yet, but I was going to figure that out in college.

My mother helped me fill out pages and pages of financial aid applications every year for all eight years of college. I often think how brave and strong she was to do it all on her own and never for one second let us know how tired she must have always been from working such long hours.

As an adult I asked her how she did it and she said, ‘you do what you need to do, you don’t think about how you feel.’ I think that says a lot about women and how they are in business. You do what you need to do because you love it, it’s not just your job, it’s your business, it’s your baby and a reflection of both your goals and your hard work.

To any woman thinking about starting a business I have the same advice my mother gave me…when we set our minds to something, there really is nothing out of reach. Surround yourself with positive, intelligent people and it’s a joy to work every day. It’s extremely rewarding to enjoy what you do and get to work with fun fabulous people every day.
