Ballroom dancers Lynn Kyes and Marshall Zenk show off their ballroom dancing skills at the Gem State Showdown.
The Granite Falls High School Ballroom Dance Team took fourth place at the Gem State National Showdance Ballroom Dance competition in Rexburg, Idaho, February 24-25. Twelve students participated in the event.
The dance team is only in its second year. Mr. Roehl began the ballroom dance program last year after teaching the class for four years in Idaho. Teams from high schools and studios from Utah, Idaho, Nevada, Arizona, and Oregon entered the competition with Granite Falls as the only Washington State team. Coach Josh Roehl said, “The competition was very tight this year, only five points separated first from fourth place.”
This year’s team included: Ezra Chavez, Brandon Prunier, Marshall Zenk, Zach Whittaker, David LaPlante, Taylor Oakes, Brianna Cervarich, Lynn Kyes, Becky Gilbertson, Diana Cortes, Semira Kern, and Samantha Murray.
The teams took fourth place with a routine in the Swing division doing a combination of Lindy Hop, Shag, and Charleston. The students practiced Monday through Friday every day after school since last October to prepare for the competition.
