Cushman named 2012 Aquafest Grand Marshal

April 3, 2012

Yep! It’s that time of year again, even through the rain and cold, Aquafest 2012 is well underway and one of the most important jobs they do is to choose the Grand Marshal for the annual Aquafest Parade.

The announcement was made at the weekly Kiwanis meeting last Wednesday where this year’s winner is a member. Aquafest President Dave DeLorm was on hand to do the honors.

“Aquafest Grand Marshal is a title bestowed upon an individual who has dedicated years of exceptional service and extraordinary achievement within the Lake Stevens community,” DeLorm said. “The Grand Marshal not only leads the parade, but represents all that is good in our community. We are honored and proud to have Fred as 2012 Aquafest Grand Marshal.”

Fred Cushman was announced as this year’s Grand Marshal to cheers and applause from the crowd.

Cushman is probably best known for his beautiful roses which he planted and maintains at the Main Street Center Market downtown.

Cushman is known to share his beautiful flowers with businesses in the downtown corridor.

He is a member and former commander of American Legion Post 181 and served honorably in the U.S. Army. His many contributions to the community don’t stop there.

He served as a Fire Commissioner from 1961-1973 and served on the Lake Stevens Civil Service Board for 25 years.

In 2008 he was Lake Stevens Citizen of the Year and was inducted into the Lake Stevens Chamber’s Hall of Fame.

“This is an honor for individuals who have distinguished themselves through extraordinary achievement and exceptional service to the Community of Lake Stevens,” DeLorm informed the crowd.

Cushman was also instrumental in raising funds and getting the war memorial built downtown. There are many days throughout the year when you can see him pulling weeds and planting flowers in that Memorial.

He continues to help with the maintenance to this day.

“The Aquafest general board unanimously elected Fred as the Grand Marshal for his lifelong years of service and dedication to the community of Lake Stevens,” DeLorm said.

Cushman and his wife Betty were married for 53 years and raised four daughters.
