DECA students head to National competition

April 3, 2012

Two DECA teams from Lake Stevens High School emerged from State Competition in March and have earned their way to compete and present at Nationals in Salt Lake City, Utah.

Taking second place at State in a Creative Marketing Project (a research based event) were Hailey Warren - senior, Hailey Doty - senior, and Aaron Piega – junior. Their marketing project tackled the declining enrollment in DECA with a two-campus marketing plan to increase awareness of the program and all it has to offer.

This 30-page plan discussed the problem (lower numbers in enrollment) and developed solutions that included presentations to Cavelero and LSHS students, marketing materials including posters and brochures, Viking TV commercials, school announcements, and a Facebook Club Fan Page - just to name a few strategies.

At State, the team presented their plan and explained it to the panel of judges. Judging was based 40 percent on the written component and 60 percent on the oral presentation. The team earned a near perfect 98 out of 100 points with one point being deducted in each category.

Leigha Staffenhagen – senior, and Khianna Calica – junior, qualified for national competition with their Chapter Awards Project (CAP). The CAP project is an 80 page documentation of the LSHS DECA program. The project reviews and depicts all projects and events that take place through the DECA program over the course of a year.

At Nationals teams share their CAP projects and learn about a variety of projects and events from other states, generating new ideas and excitement for DECA programs.
