Storm Aquatics celebrates ten years

April 3, 2012

Storm Aquatics celebrates their 10th year as a team. They started with only 10 members and now have over 70.

Storm Aquatics, Lake Stevens’ one and only swim team is celebrating their 10th year as a team.

Storm Aquatics started in March 2002 with only ten swimmers and is now a team of 70 swimmers ranging in age from six to twenty-seven years old. The team started by only using two of the lanes at the Lake Stevens High School Pool and now uses all six lanes, five days of the week and on some Saturdays too.

The team’s membership swells considerably during the summer when all of the Summer League swimmers join the team. Because of these fantastic numbers and fabulous swimmers Storm Aquatics has taken first place in the North Cascade Summer Swim League Team Competition two out of the last three years.

Storm Aquatics has also had several accomplished swimmers on the team. Garren Riechel, who still holds many of the team’s records, participated in the 2008 Olympic Trials, in 2005 Martha Pohl, in 2008 Kyle Libra and this year Brittany Tourigny each have represented Storm Aquatics at the Speedo Championship Series Western Zone Senior Sectionals competition.

This year’s team also has Alyssa Hyland, McKenna Willey, Jade Lippmann, and Kurt Lippmann participating in the Northwest Regional Short Course Age Group Championships taking place this month. Storm Aquatics also has several swim officials in their ranks who volunteer all over the Pacific Northwest region officiating at the many swim meets happening almost every weekend during the year. Storm Aquatics has come a long way in the past ten years.
