Seven juniors will represent Lake Stevens High School at the 2012 Boys State leadership conference in June on the Central Washington State University campus in Ellensburg.
Keith Acfalle, Mawuli Attipoe, Joe Hendrickson, Alex Powell, Jared Rahn, Grant Reimers, and Alec Yeuter will attend the week-long simulation in government that is often called a leadership action program in practical citizenship. About 300 of the best students from schools around Washington are accepted to “Evergreen Boys State” each year.
The LSHS students, along with the others, will participate as citizens at the local, county, and state levels of government in the simulated “State of Evergreen.”
All high-school boys are eligible for Boys State who have completed their junior year with at least one more semester of High School remaining.
They must demonstrate outstanding leadership, character, scholarship, loyalty, and service to their schools.
Mr. Jim Talley, long-time educator at Lake Stevens High School, served for many years as liaison with LSHS and The American Legion for the Boys and Girls State programs.
He highly recommended these students this year when he sent their applications for processing only days before he passed away in late March.
Each student at Boys State is eligible to earn four college credits for their efforts because of the depth and scope of the program and the work involved.
Their tuition, room and board, and transportation will be paid by Lake Stevens Memorial American Legion Post 181 and other American Legion sponsors.
Locally, Lake Stevens Memorial Post 181 and American Legion Auxiliary Unit 181 with assistance from the late Jim Talley and other LSHS staff have been selecting and sending qualified students to Boys/Girls State for years.
