Students in Ms. Shelle Rock’s third grade classroom at Mount Pilchuck Elementary School were witness to a huge surprise when their teacher was awarded Teacher of the Week by STAR 101.5 radio on Friday, May 18.

Rock was very pleasantly surprised herself.

“Wow, that was crazy,” she said. “That was a nice surprise, it was really sweet.”

Rock was nominated by her student Julianna Opdahl and her mom Rachel.

“She’s a great teacher,” Rachel said. “Julianna has had difficulty in reading and Ms. Rock has helped her exponentially. She holds the kids responsible for their own learning. She is a great communicator and has made a huge difference in Julie’s education.”

Even Julianna can see the difference Ms. Rock has made in her learning over the past year.

“She has helped me learn to write better, read better and do math better,” Julianna said. “She’s so nice.”

Each student received a goody bag full of prizes from McDonald’s, Sky Nursery, KOMO 4, KOMO Communities and STAR 101.5 from STAR 101.5’s afternoon show host Curt Kruse.

Ms. Rock received a personalized plaque from Trophies2go.com, a $100 check, a $50 Sky Nursery gift card and a prize pack from City University of Seattle.

She also gets to choose between a makeover or a Kindle courtesy of Blanc N’ Schwartz Salon in Kent.
