Pearson to return $20k communications budget
Rep. Kirk Pearson will return nearly all of his communications budget provided by the Washington State House of Representatives to save taxpayers $20,000. Each state representative is provided a modest mail and postage budget to ensure ample communications with constituents.
“In a 31 billion dollar budget, this is not all that much money. But, it is taxpayer money that I believe could be put to better use helping the disabled, elderly and children,” said Pearson, R-Monroe. “I’ve advocated for prioritized spending that focuses on education, public safety and services for the most vulnerable, so this is just one way I can lead by example. Citizens have cut back their spending in this tough economy and I believe it is only right for me to respect every dollar they send to the state.”
Communications budgets have been reduced by half over the past five years. State representatives may use as much of these budgets as they would like, and are allowed to mail out two district printed newsletters in an election year such as this one.
Pearson added that he always makes himself available to meet with constituents to listen to concerns and answer questions.
“I hope people know that my door is always open and I am accessible to meet with groups and individuals as well as help residents work with state agencies and find state services,” Pearson said. “Instead of mailing a newsletter to residents, I’ll continue to be out in the community. If folks want to set up a meeting with me, they can call my legislative office and we’ll find a time that works.”
