Lake Stevens teachers ratify three-year contract

July 17, 2012

Lake Stevens teachers met on Wednesday, July 11 to vote on the tentative contract agreement that was reached on June 28. Members of the Lake Stevens School District’s Negotiating team and the Lake Stevens Education Association began meeting to discuss the contract on May 17.

Superintendent Amy Beth Cook stated, “Even with budget cuts still in place from the past three years we are pleased we are able to acknowledge our teacher’s hard work with a two percent increase per year. Additionally, we came together on a number of issues that will improve professional development time for our teachers, without a loss of instructional time for our students.”

Contract

In addition to contract language changes the teachers will receive a two percent increase each of the three years of the contract. Teachers will also be compensated for professional development days, one the first year of the contract and two the remaining two years of the contract.

Report Cards

All schools in the district will move to a semester calendar for all grades and parents/guardians/students will receive two report cards – one in January and one in June. Teachers will update students’ on-line grades every two weeks so that parents can review their child’s progress on an on-going basis. For parents that do not have computer access a communication plan will be developed by the building principal.

At the fall and spring conferences elementary and Middle School teachers will continue to provide for parents, documentation of student progress.

School Day/Early Release

Friday early release will continue and 25 minutes will be added to the existing one hour release. Every Friday for the 2012-13 school year students will be dismissed 85 minutes early. In order to accommodate the additional 25 minutes of early release time on Fridays, five minutes has been added to the end of every school day for all schools.

Professional Development days will be added, one in the 2012-13 school year and two every year thereafter. For the 2012-13 school year August 30 has been set for teacher professional development.
