Banning guns will not stop the violence

Dear Editor,

The shootings in Aurora, Colo. have sparked debate again on gun control, the meaning behind the second amendment, and how to lessen gun violence in the United States.

Limiting gun rights does not make us safer, but it does make us less free.

I would point to the fact that individuals bent on destruction do not need guns to meet their ends. Some 3,000 died on Sept. 11, 2001 because men who wanted to cause great destruction used box cutters to take over planes and then fly them into buildings.

If banning guns stopped gun violence; then why does Chicago, a city with strict gun laws, have more than 274 deaths this year?

The right to keep and bear arms is a modern-day extension of the right to self-defense, it is natural, or fundamental and the government has no legal authority to take away an absolute right without due process.

Gun control advocates want to focus on the guns because it takes our attention from the real issue which is the evil that some people have in their hearts.

We have had violence before we ever had guns, it is not the instrument of destruction that is key, but the person/people who have bad intentions because they will find whatever weapon they can to complete their horrible actions.
