On Saturday, October 27, members of the HOPE Covenant Church gathered at Lake Stevens Middle School, armed with garden tools of all kinds, to help improve the school’s campus.

Led by Pastor Bill Walles, 30 members of the church spread fresh mulch, provided by the school, on all of the plant beds around the grounds. They also helped weed and landscape areas. The cleanup was scheduled to last three hours but because of the number of people who came out to help, they were able to finish in an hour and a half.

Pastor Walles was asked by Principal Michael Weatherbie if the congregation could help them with this project and they were more than happy to offer their services. Pastor Walles explained that the church is committed to giving back to the school and wants to help anyway they can, “We think LSMS has some of the greatest teachers and students on the inside of the buildings. We wanted to do a little something to make the outside just as great,” said Walles.

Principal Weatherbie said the partnership between the school and church has been wonderful and it means a great deal to the LSMS community. “Without hesitation, Pastor Walles and his congregation reach out to support our students and families in times of need. Most recently, their generosity and hard work in sprucing up our campus has helped to create an environment we can all be proud of,” explained Weatherbie.

Sarah Walker, a sixth grade teacher at LSMS and member of the church described the morning by saying it was very fun and thought it was a great way to support the school. “It amazed me how much they want to give back to the community,” Walker expressed. She and her family have been attending services for four months and are continually impressed by how committed the church is to serving the community.

The HOPE Covenant Church was founded by Walles and has been in Lake Stevens for a little under a year. Services have been held at Lake Stevens Middle School since the church began and Pastor Walles couldn’t be happier. “We love the school and we are very thankful for being able to meet here,” Walles shared.

Principal Weatherbie is excited about the future of the partnership between the school and church, “We look forward to sustaining our relationship with HOPE and feel fortunate to have them as an integral community partner,” Weatherbie stated.
