The Lake Stevens High School Wrestling team rolled over Mount Vernon 70 to 4 on Thursday night, recording 10 pins and forfeits to bring their Wesco North record to 3-0.

The match of the night was between Lake Stevens Jake Douglas, ranked fifth in state at 120 pounds, and Mount Vernon’s Luis Reyna, ranked sixth in state at 126 pounds. Douglas, Wrestling up a weight class, gave up two early takedowns and three near fall points to go down 7-1 in the second round.

But in the match’s final minutes Douglas threw Reyna to his back for four points and scored two more takedowns to complete the comeback and defeat Reyna 10-9.

The Vikings finish the dual-meet season at home at 7 p.m. on Tuesday, January 22, in a match against Snohomish for the Wesco North title. Snohomish is undefeated in league matches and 8-1 overall, with a loss to Tahoma, the defending state champions.

Along with defending their Wesco North title, Lake Stevens wrestlers will also be looking to extend an 18-year home dual-meet winning streak. Lake Stevens will also be honoring its senior wrestlers, and the Purple and Gold Club will be hosting a free chili feed at 5:30 p.m.

After the dual-meet season ends, the Vikings will be preparing for the district championships at Snohomish High School on February 1 and 2, where the state-tournament qualification process begins.

The Vikings are now ranked first in state for 4A and all classes, with two wrestlers—Eric Soler and Brandon Johnson—ranked first in their weight classes and ten other wrestlers ranked in the top ten.
